Equal Safety

Equal® Sweetener is safe.

Aspartame, the sweetening ingredient in Equal, is one of the most studied food ingredients in FDA history. It has been proven safe by over 200 objective scientific studies and is accepted as safe in more than 100 countries worldwide.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has studied aspartame extensively over the past 24 years and has never identified any safety concerns. The safety of aspartame has been confirmed by regulatory authorities in other countries, including Health Canada, the European Commission's Scientific Committee on Food and experts with the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Furthermore, leading authorities including the American Medical Association, the American Dietetic Association and the American Diabetes Association have recognized aspartame's safety.

However, people with the extremely rare disease phenylketonuria (PKU) should consult with their physician before consuming aspartame in beverages or products.
